|
It's hard not to get carried away at Christmas and find yourself spending more than you'd otherwise planned. The problem is, once the money has been spent, the presents given out and the plum pudding consumed, the dent that your extra unplanned spending leaves on your mortgage savings may still be with you when Christmas comes around next year.
In this issue we've created a quick list of money saving tips, designed to help you spend your money wisely, enjoy Christmas and keep your mortgage untouched.
It's very easy to get swept up in the magic of Christmas and find that you start the New Year with empty pockets and the stress of having dinted your mortgage savings in order to finance your festive fun. We've come up with a few quick tips to help you survive the festive season with your finances intact.

- Make a list of people with budgeted costs for their gift and stick to your budget.
- Work out what food and beverage you need to purchase and then scan the specials catalogues (which will be arriving in your letterbox regularly between now and Christmas) rather than simply buying on impulse at the last moment.
- Give yourself a spending allowance for 'fun' and put the money in a separate purse or wallet so that you are not tempted to dip into other money.
- If you invite friends over, ask them to bring a plate so that you're not providing everything.
- Make a fruit punch alcoholic or non-alcoholic – you'll find that punch can be created cost effectively and goes a long way.
- Make your own bon-bons and other decorations. Toilet rolls, crepe paper, novelty sweets or trinkets from the $2 shop can make your bon-bons fun and your Xmas decorating money go a lot further.
- Car pool – if you're going to any Christmas functions, make sure you car pool or share a cab, that way your transport costs don’t go sky high and arrange how you will go home before you go.
